TO-CONFIRM

Apprentice in a Red Seal trade

No dollar total

Alberta does not publish a separate Red Seal or C of Q exam fee for apprentices. Apprentices in Red Seal trades write the Red Seal exam at their school after they pass the final period exam, so the exam is part of classroom instruction. The Apprenticeship Education Program application fee is $150.

Trades Qualifier

No dollar total

Trades Qualifier program application fee runs $150 to $450 depending on the program. The first attempt at the theory exam is included in that application fee. Alberta says a new exam rewrite fee is required for a Trades Qualifier second attempt but does not publish the amount on the page. Practical exam fees vary by trade and must be paid before the exam is scheduled. Trades Qualifier candidates get three theory exam attempts. Failing the third attempt cancels the application; to continue you must file a new application with fees and a Training Plan.

Already certified, writing the Red Seal later

$150.00

Alberta lists the Interprovincial Red Seal Application at $150 for certified journeypersons and qualification certificate holders who apply later to write the Red Seal exam. After two unsuccessful attempts at the same eligible exam with a mark of at least 60% on one attempt, you must complete and get approval for an AIT Training Plan before an extra attempt is allowed. For the Red Seal exam written later by a certified journeyperson, two or more prior Red Seal attempts means you must provide at least 40 hours of additional study or upgrading with your application. An unsuccessful Red Seal exam cancels the application and a new application with fee is required.

Eligibility

Apprenticeship completion is the common path. Experienced workers use the provincial challenge or qualifier route. Read that page before you count hours.

Alberta

  • Tradesecrets says the welder apprenticeship is three periods of 12 months, with at least 1,560 hours of on-the-job training and 8 weeks of class each year.
  • Apprentices may attempt the interprovincial exam in the final period. Success grants the Red Seal. Finishing the program also produces a journeyperson certificate and a diploma.
  • The trades qualifier work-experience route on that profile asks for 54 months and 7,020 hours, a theory exam, and a practical exam listed at $160.
  • A recognized credential from another jurisdiction still requires the theory exam and the same practical exam on that page.
  • Alberta lists the Interprovincial Red Seal Application at $150 for certified journeypersons and qualification certificate holders who apply later to write the Red Seal exam.
  • For the Red Seal exam written later by a certified journeyperson, two or more prior Red Seal attempts means you must provide at least 40 hours of additional study or upgrading with your application.

TO-CONFIRM. Alberta does not publish a separate Red Seal or C of Q exam fee for apprentices. Apprentices in Red Seal trades write the Red Seal exam at their school after they pass the final period exam, so the exam is part of classroom instruction. The Apprenticeship Education Program application fee is $150.

Ontario

  • Skilled Trades Ontario says the welder trade has an apprenticeship and a certifying exam. Passing the exam produces a Certificate of Qualification.
  • The trade is non-compulsory. The certificate does not have to be renewed, and people working in the trade are not listed on the public register for that reason.
  • You book after a Certificate of Apprenticeship or an approved Trade Equivalency Assessment, and after the fee is paid.
  • Completed apprentices who finished on or after 1 January 2025 receive a one-year provisional certificate and a waiver of the first written exam fee.

British Columbia

  • SkilledTradesBC uses the same certification-exam fee table for apprentices and for trade qualifiers as it publishes for other Red Seal certification exams.
  • Apprentices schedule after technical training. The first two certification attempts have no fee.
  • Trade qualifiers approved to challenge pay $120 for the first attempt. From 1 December 2023 they have four writes.
  • The pass mark is 70%.

How to book

Alberta

  • Apprentices get the scheduling details from the instructor in the final period.
  • Endorsement applicants use MyTradesecrets, choose the Red Seal program, and pay the application.
  • Approved exams are scheduled at the nearest Apprenticeship and Industry Training office.

Ontario

  • Book in the Skilled Trades Ontario portal under Examination. Pay $150 + HST unless the first-attempt waiver is already on the account.
  • A confirmation email is the last step in the booking instructions.
  • Phone the office if you need an accommodation. The online path asks you to say no to accommodation and call if you need one.

British Columbia

  • Use the portal, phone customer service, or email the exam application to [email protected].
  • Sittings are on the published schedule, or at a Service BC office if those dates do not work.
  • A separate $100 exam rescheduling fee applies if you miss a scheduled exam or cancel within 30 days.

Rewrite rules

Alberta

  • An unsuccessful Red Seal exam cancels the application and a new application with fee is required.
  • The practical exam fee on the welder profile is a separate charge from the written application.

TO-CONFIRM. Alberta says a new exam rewrite fee is required for a Trades Qualifier second attempt but does not publish the amount on the page. Practical exam fees vary by trade and must be paid before the exam is scheduled.

Ontario

  • There is a 30-day wait after a failed certifying exam, and you pay again before you can reschedule.
  • The first-attempt waiver does not cover the rewrite.

British Columbia

  • 30 days between attempts.
  • Apprentice certification attempts: no fee, no fee, then $100 with a study plan, $100 with proof of upgrading, and $100 after the completions team contacts you.
  • Challenge attempts stop at four writes on the published table: $120, no fee, $100, $100.

Allowed references

Plan on the materials the national guide says are handed out. Your provincial office can add an identification rule or a practical-test rule that this page does not cover.

  • The welder Red Seal occupational standard. Sub-tasks performed by journeypersons in at least 70% of provinces and territories can be examined.
  • The formula sheet and acronym list on the welder exam information page. Both are provided at the sitting. This site does not reprint the sheet as a handout.
  • Standard process names: SMAW, FCAW, MCAW, GMAW, GTAW, SAW, OFC, PAC, and CAC-A. The exam uses those names, not brand names.
  • Pencil and bubble sheet habits. The preparation guide says you record answers on the bubble sheet.

Ten original questions

Pending review

Written for this site and pending review by a qualified person. Not past exam items, not copied from a code book, and not an official or certified exam bank. The interactive quiz needs JavaScript. The questions and answers are also in the page.

  1. Shielded metal arc welding (SMAW) uses which kind of electrode?

    • A. A flux-covered consumable electrode
    • B. A bare tungsten electrode that is not meant to melt
    • C. A spool of wire with no arc
    • D. An oxy-fuel cutting tip
    Answer and explanation

    A. A flux-covered consumable electrode

SMAW uses a flux-covered consumable electrode. GTAW uses a non-consumable tungsten electrode and a separate filler when filler is needed. This is a naming question, not a procedure from a code book.

  2. Gas tungsten arc welding (GTAW) is built around:

    • A. A consumable flux-covered stick only
    • B. A non-consumable tungsten electrode and a shielding gas
    • C. A submerged flux blanket with no visible arc
    • D. A grinding disc
    Answer and explanation

    B. A non-consumable tungsten electrode and a shielding gas

GTAW holds an arc from a tungsten electrode under a shielding gas. SAW hides the arc under flux. Knowing which name is which is worth more on this exam than a shop nickname.

  3. How many of the 125 welder questions are in the welding-processes block?

    • A. 20
    • B. 23
    • C. 28
    • D. 54
    Answer and explanation

    D. 54

red-seal.ca assigns 54 questions to welding processes, 28 to layout and fabrication, 23 to cutting and gouging, and 20 to common occupational skills.

  4. The national welder exam's published time and pass mark are:

    • A. 3 hours and 65%
    • B. 4 hours and 70%
    • C. 4 hours and 65%
    • D. 2 hours and 75%
    Answer and explanation

    B. 4 hours and 70%

The Red Seal preparation guide says four hours and 70% for Red Seal exams. The 65% figure belongs to the power engineer papers, not this one.

  5. The heat-affected zone is:

    • A. The weld metal only, after it has been painted
    • B. The base metal next to the weld whose properties the weld heat changed
    • C. The slag pan under the table
    • D. The tungsten electrode
    Answer and explanation

    B. The base metal next to the weld whose properties the weld heat changed

The heat-affected zone is base metal that did not melt but was changed by the welding heat. This definition is for study. It is not a quotation from a CSA standard and not an official exam item.

  6. Oxy-fuel gas cutting is abbreviated on the Red Seal welder page as:

    • A. OFC
    • B. GTAW
    • C. SMAW
    • D. SAW
    Answer and explanation

    A. OFC

The breakdown uses OFC for oxy-fuel gas cutting, PAC for plasma arc cutting, and CAC-A for air carbon arc cutting. Those abbreviations are also on the acronym list provided at the sitting.

  7. In Ontario, the welder certificate of qualification:

    • A. Must be renewed every year because the trade is compulsory
    • B. Does not have to be renewed, because the trade is non-compulsory
    • C. Is issued by TSSA as a ski lift class
    • D. Replaces the practical test in every province
    Answer and explanation

    B. Does not have to be renewed, because the trade is non-compulsory

Skilled Trades Ontario says the welder trade is non-compulsory, the certificate does not have to be renewed, and practitioners are not placed on the public register for that reason. 313A is the compulsory trade with an annual renewal.

  8. The Alberta welder profile lists the trades qualifier practical exam at:

    • A. $37.75
    • B. $89
    • C. $150 for the written Red Seal application, and the practical is unpriced
    • D. $160
    Answer and explanation

    D. $160

The profile lists the practical exam at $160 for both the work-experience qualifier and the recognized-credential qualifier. The $150 figure is the separate Red Seal application on the apply-online page. $89 and $37.75 are power engineer fees.

  9. A valve-protection cap on a compressed-gas cylinder belongs in place when:

    • A. The regulator is attached and the torch is lit
    • B. The cylinder is being stored or moved and is not connected for use
    • C. You are rolling the cylinder by the valve
    • D. The cylinder is lying under the bench as a support
    Answer and explanation

    B. The cylinder is being stored or moved and is not connected for use

The cap protects the valve when the cylinder is stored or moved and is not in use. Follow the safety data sheet and the shop procedure for the gas you have. This is a study question about that habit, not a copied code clause.

  10. A Red Seal multiple-choice question has:

    • A. Two correct answers and you pick either
    • B. One correct answer and three incorrect options
    • C. A written paragraph instead of options, on the welder exam
    • D. No incorrect options, so the longest answer wins
    Answer and explanation

    B. One correct answer and three incorrect options

The welder exam information page says every question has exactly one correct answer and three incorrect options. They are not trick questions, and the wrong options are not always obvious.

FAQ

FAQ

Does this site have a welder practice app?

Not yet. SteamTicket covers power engineering and 313A. SkiLiftQuiz will cover the Ontario ski lift exam. Use the waitlist on this page, tagged for the welder exam, and you will be emailed when a welder practice app launches. No other product is linked.

Is the practical test the same thing as the Red Seal written exam?

No. The Red Seal exam described here is the 125-question written exam. Alberta's welder profile also requires a practical exam, listed at $160, on the trades qualifier routes. Ask your provincial office whether your path includes a practical.

Why does the breakdown show zero questions for communications and mentoring?

That is what the welder exam information page prints for that task. A zero means it is not in the current count. The other common-skills tasks still add up to 20 questions. The page says counts can change, so look again before you write.

Are these 10 questions from a real paper?

No. They were written for this guide. Red Seal's own page has style examples. Those examples are not repeated here.
